The Student Information System Is Now
    PEARSON CENTERPOINT

Effective immediately, the Student System Log In which was originally named and developed by SiPS, is now Pearson Centerpoint. In our district communications and on our web site, the student information system will be changed and always referred to as Pearson Centerpoint – a name chosen to describe a system that is the center point or nervous system of a school's operations. It is where each user of the system: administrator, teacher, student and parent can access information from one convenient location, or Centerpoint. The SiPS product was recently acquired by Pearson School Systems (PSS). We are excited because this acquisition and name change also reflects the backing of the world's largest education company. If you have questions or have not received your log in information to this system, please contact your building secretary or our District Information Technology Specialist Dave McGill, 895-8843 ext 4013. Thank you for your patience while we update our technology to serve you better.

HS EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM OFF TO A GREAT START
Tom Wilkinson (ELP Coordinator) and David Kennedy (HS counselor) have been meeting daily with high school students who want to enroll in more rigorous courses while they continue to study at MVHS. To date, seven students have enrolled in online Advanced Placement courses offered through the University of Iowa. Students are currently enrolled in the following courses: AP Chemistry, AP Literature/Composition, AP Language/Composition, AP Psychology, and AP Government.

Mr. Wilkinson assists students in grades 10-12 to apply for admission, gather textbooks and study materials, and problem-solve the technical challenges associated with online instruction. Students earn high school credit for these courses and their grades appear on MVHS grade reports. Students are encouraged to take AP exams in the spring in order to earn potential college credit for their AP study.

Mr. Kennedy coordinates another extended learning opportunity for our upperclassmen known as the Post-Secondary Education Option (PSEO) program. PSEO allows our students to enroll in courses (not available at MVHS) at local community colleges, private colleges, and/or state universities. To date, twelve high school students are enrolled in PSEO courses during this first semester. These courses include advanced study in Music, Health Sciences, Education, and Social Studies at the present time. As with our online AP students, PSEO students also are enrolled in MVHS classes throughout the school year.

For more information about AP online or PSEO opportunities, please contact either Mr. Kennedy or Mr. Wilkinson at 895-8843.

    WE NOW HAVE VOICE MAIL
In the April issue of the District Newsletter is a copy of the new "Mount Vernon Community School District Phone and Email Directory." (Also available here on our web site Phone Directory
or when you Search A Person) A new phone system installed in District buildings now allows all staff members to have individual extensions. Since many staff members are not available throughout the day, their extension number allows you to leave a voice mail directly in their voice mail box by connecting to their extension. You will always have the option of connecting back with the building secretary if you would like immediate attention.

Don't worry, when you call any of our buildings during the school day, your call will still be answered personally by a staff member. Should you get a recording, it just means everyone is busy at the moment. You will be directed to the next step, which is to try another extension or to leave a voice message. It's new to us too, so please be patient if we "lose" a few of you as we get used to the new features. Please let us know if you have problems with the system so we can correct any features that cause problems with communication.

One of the convenient features of this new system for you means that if your child is going to be absent, you may call the absence in at any time, 24 hours a day. When you call the school building number, you will be directed to the student attendance voice mail.

    > DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR CHILD IS EATING?

Parents now have access to the Mount Vernon Schools Nutrition Program website. This link is provided on the home page as well as in the parent section of the site at For Parents Only. After you have logged into your family account on this website, you can view your family's current account balance, deposits into your family's account, and you can view in detail what breakfast and lunch items your children are eating at school each day. It is also where you setup the option to have the system email you when your family account balance is running low.

Your family's username and password to access this system have been mailed to your family's home address. Please check your mail over the next few days for this information. If it does not arrive by mail at your home, please email Matt Burke (or call the Superintendent's office at 895-8845) to have this information mailed to you again.

    CHILDCARE COMMENTS WELCOME
The School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC), at the request of the School Board, has been looking into whether or not it would be desirable and feasible for the district to run or sponsor a year-round childcare facility to be housed in the current Middle School after appropriate modifications are made to the building and grounds. This building will be available after June 2006.

We need to hear from district parents with childcare needs. What sort of program would best serve your needs? Would you, in fact, enroll your children in such a program? Is this something you want the district to do, or do you feel your needs are well-served by existing childcare arrangements?

To collect some of this information, a letter was sent home with current kindergartners asking their parents' participation in a phone survey on this issue which took place the week of Spring Break. If you are a parent who was unable to respond to the phone survey, or if you are a community member who simply wishes to comment on the need for and desirability of district childcare, please email your thoughts and suggestions to Jeff Schwiebert at jschwiebert@mountvernon.k12.ia.us.

We would also appreciate your help in finding newer community members or those whose children are not yet school age and who might not hear of this through any other means. If you know of a neighbor or church member with young children, encourage them to send a message to the above email. Thanks for your help!

    8TH GRADE STUDENT JAZZ COMBO
These 8th graders are love jazz. So they have started the 'Mustang Mavericks' jazz ensemble on their own time. They play a variety of styles of music from jazz, blues, swing, gospel, & jazz-rock.

In the picture from left to right it is: Sam Young-Bass, Tom Schroeder,-Drums, Jared Knight,-Keyboard Adam Craig-Trumpet, and Ben Schutt,-Alto Sax.

High School Band Director Alan Kiser (who also finds time to help coach them) says 'It is amazing what the students have accomplished in such a short time. The boys and parents are very excited about this group. 'They have created their own website: Jazz Mavericks. The parents came up with the name "Jazz Mavericks"- a combination of something relating to mustangs - and the fact that the group does quite a bit of improvisation.

They started the group in December and rehearse generally on Sunday afternoons at the Schroeder's house (where the drumset is). The group performed at the MS Variety Show (Tsunami Fundraiser) back in March and also at the March 16 Spring MS Band Concert. The boys are scheduled to perform April 11 for Lions Club (at Gwen's) and April 20 for Rotary (also at Gwen's).

They are planning to play at the Presbyterian church May 8 as part of a "Youth" Sunday and are working on arranging a performance at Hallmark Care Center. Way to go guys!

KLEIMAN WINS CONSTRUCTION BID FOR NEW HS
The Mount Vernon Community School Board Thursday (March 17,2005) authorized its architectural consultants to enter into negotiations with Kleiman Construction of Cedar Rapids to be the general contractor to build the district's new high school building. The Board determined Kleiman to be the apparent low bidder among four construction firms that submitted bid proposals for the new 93,000 sq. ft. building. The building will be constructed west of the current high school building which will become the district's Middle School.

Concerned about rising prices for construction materials, contractors were instructed to submit bids on a basic building plan and then to also submit prices for additional options. The Kleiman firm's bid enabled the Board to accept all of the additional alternates which will result in a building with all of the features envisioned when the district referendum voters approved a bond issue in late 2004. The total cost of the base bid and alternates is $10,715,480.

"The generous response of private donors to augment the $8.9 million bond issue financing, and the competitive contractor bids have given the Mount Vernon Schools a giant boost," said Superintendent Jeff Schwiebert.

A ground breaking ceremony will be held April 16. Construction will begin in April and the District expects to occupy the building in August of 2006.

The new high school designed by OPN Architects represents the beginning of Phase 2 in a five-phase District Facilities Plan that continues to 'fulfill the promise' of excellence in academics, arts and athletics for the students of Mount Vernon Schools.

MS ELP COMPETES IN FUTURE CITIES COMPETITION
A team of Mount Vernon Middle School ELP Students built a city of the future for National Engineering Week using the program Sim City 3000. For the competition they took a portion of the city and made a 3-D scale model of it that included a moving part. They also had to research a topic and write an essay and abstract on how their city will use that resource. This year's topic was aggregates. They then had to prepare a presentation to be judged by a panel of engineers.

Team members were Caitlin Mills, Zach Demanett, and Jared Knight. Several other 8th graders helped them with the project including Megan Grunder, Ben Deininger, Ben Schutt, Jonah Greenstein, and Rachel Simons.

A THANK YOU FROM ALAN KISER, BAND DIRECTOR
To High School (& 8th Grade) Band Parents & MV Community Members,

"Congrats on a great pep band season this year!!! The students have made outstanding progress since HS pep band last year. Most schools do not learn 10 brand new pep band pieces in one year on top of their normal curriculum of marching & concert music.

We had another excellent performance at last Friday night's double-header that included 51 student and 9 adults in the band.

I am very pleased at how much the students learned and improved while gaining valuable band experience. Having a good pep band season helps to strengthen our concert program for this year and marching/concert/pep band for next year as well. They are all interconnected. And most of the students are starting to realize how much fun pep band can be... Several students performed 3 or 4 of the 4 nights choosing to do more than the 2 required.

A big "Thank You!" to all of the adults that came out this year to join us at pep band. You have helped demonstrate to the students that music can be
a life-long learning activity. Plan on coming back next year & invite other adults in our community that might want to dust off their instrument and do some playing."

REMINDER TO PARENTS -- MIDDLE SCHOOL CONFERENCE DATES HAVE CHANGED
Middle School Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on March 8 and 10. These dates are different than what appear on the calendar distributed at the beginning of the year. The reason the conferences have been moved forward on the calendar is to give students who have allowed their grades to slip, ample time to improve their grades before both quarter and semester deadlines. We will continue to have conferences at this approximate time in subsequent years as well.

Because only the middle school will be conferencing on these dates, the conferences will be held at the middle school rather than at the high school. They will still be arena style and will still be held in the school gymnasium, but it will be the middle school gym. Conferences run from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on both dates.

    MS TSUNAMI FUND RAISING EFFORTS
Although several of the middle school's fund raising efforts have been completed two significant efforts still remain.

First, in early March, the middle school will be selling rubber bracelets (similar to other fund raisers such as Lance Armstrong's yellow Livestrong bracelets). The bracelets will be maroon and white with the lettering, "One World - #1 Mt. Vernon" prominently imprinted on the sides. The bracelets will come in both adult and youth sizes and will sell for $2.00 each. Over one dollar from each sale will be added to the Tsunami Relief Fund.

Second, on March 15, the middle school will be having a Talent Show in the middle school auditorium. The performance will showcase the talents of our middle school students in a variety of different forms. The show will start at 6:30 PM and will cost $2.00 per ticket. It goes without saying that seating is extremely limited. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to our fund.

    CAY CHAIRPERSONS NEEDED
For many years the CAY (Community Action for Youth) group has sponsored substance-free activities for our high school students for New Year's Eve and Post Prom. For whatever reason, this year no one has volunteered to head up the New Year's Eve party or Post Prom which would be held on April 30, 2005. Many people have expressed an interest in helping out at these times but none have volunteered to head the activities. At this time no New Year's Eve activity is being planned. If you are interested in chairing or helping out at either of these important activities, please contact Chris Osborn at the elementary school, 895-6251 or email her at cosborn@mountvernon.k12.ia.us.

    PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES CONTINUE THIS WEEK
Parent/Teacher Conferences for Mount Vernon Schools will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 11 & 18 for high school and middle school students and Thursday, November 18 & Monday, November 22 for elementary students.

Middle school conferences will be conducted in the high school gymnasium, arena style with teachers located around the gym. Appointments are not made ahead of time. Parents can simply drop in to conference with your child's teachers around scheduled high school and elementary conferences you already have arranged. Conferences will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note, teachers that share responsibilities between buildings were present for middle school conferences on the 11th but will be with their other buildings on the 18th. The exception to this is those teachers that teach primarily at the high school (Happel, Kiser, Kragenbrink, Nelson) will be at the high school doing high school conferences. If you desire to talk to them, please feel free to set up an appointment.

Teachers will break from 6:00 - 6:10 on both evenings. Without a scheduled break, they would need to go straight for four hours, and that would be difficult for anyone.

Many high school teachers are booked solid on both conference days, but not all. Each parent who returned his or her conference request form should have a 10-minute conference with up to three (3) teachers. Parents may also be able to visit with additional teachers if the teacher has an "open" conference space. Finally, if a parent is unable to meet with a teacher or if a conference time is missed, parents are encouraged to schedule another time by phoning or emailing the teacher.

ITEDS AND ITBS TESTING THIS WEEK
HIGH SCHOOL:The Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED) will be administered to grades 9-11 on November 15-18. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will take nine different tests during two-hour sessions on these four days. These sub-tests will measure student's individual growth in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. Testing sessions will be conducted from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on each day.

Seniors do not take ITED tests. The school day for seniors will start at 10:30 a.m. on these dates. An adjusted class schedule on these days will be followed with each period lasting approximately 25 minutes.

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL: Elementary and middle school students will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) during the week of November 15. The main purpose of the ITBS is to provide our District with information that can be used to improve instruction and to help teachers make sound educational decisions about each student's learning. The scores allow the school to check year-to-year growth and to identify students' strengths and weaknesses.

The tests cover many of the fundamental skills your child is learning in school: vocabulary, reading comprehension, language and mathematics.

Middle School ITBS tests will be given during the first two hours of each day.

    Following are a few things you can do to help your child do their very best on these tests;
    • Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep. They should get a minimum of 8-10 hours to be at peak performance levels.
    • Make sure they eat a nutritious breakfast each morning of the tests.
    • Try to schedule doctor and dental appointments at times different from this week. It is always difficult to make up these tests and when make-ups are crammed in between other activities, students seldom do their best.
    • Make sure your child brings several #2 pencils that week with erasers. This is a little thing that makes a big difference.

Students should be encouraged to do their best on the test, as they should for all school activities. However, it would be harmful to place too much emphasis on the importance of the tests by making students feel anxious or stressed about the outcomes. By maintaining a typical schedule and atmosphere at home during the week of testing, you can help your child have a positive testing experience.

If you have questions regarding the tests, please call Duane Orr
(middle school) at 895-6254 or Jeff Risk (elementary school) at 895-6251.

    CROSS COUNTRY CONFERENCE MEET RESULTS
    submitted by Coach Deibner
The cross country EIHC Conference meet at Williamsburg was very successful despite the rapid change in temperature, the wind, and the rain. After a very exciting half hour of chasing down a tent in flight (and disassembling it) we had a very successful meet.

The JV Girls Team ran first and had a good showing. Leah Apple, senior, 4 year member and captain, came in first for us with a time of 19:58. Other times follow. JV girls placed 4th overall.

The JV Boys Team was very successful with Aaron Schmidt,Tyler Cooper and Chase Rutledge placing 1st, 3rd and 5th overall. The team placed 2nd with 35 points, only 2 pjoints out of 1st place. Runner times and places are listed below.

The Girls Varsity team ran very well. Annie Thomsen, our first runner, placed 26 with a time of 17:17. Abby Martin and Rachel Stewart were just behind with 29th and 31st place and times of 17:29 and 17:53. The Girls Varsity team placed 6th overall in one of the most highly competitive girls races in the state.

The Boys Varsity team dominated! A surprise to both Regina and Williamsburg, but of course no surprise to us. Our boys jogged off with the 1st Place Conference trophy! Jake Vozenilek was clearly our most valuable runner in the race with 2nd place and a time of 17:12. But, nothing could have been won without the solid performance of the other runners who ran as a unit strong and fast! Against great odds they showed everyone present that Mount Vernon-Lisbon is a force.
