In Memoriam
Clayton & Colton Novak Buddy Bench
The buddy bench sits on the Washington Elementary playground. The bench was created by Kirk Wischmeyer in memory of Clayton and Colton Novak. The bench is a place for anyone feeling alone, left out or bullied to sit. Students or staff who want to help can approach and ask the person on the bench about what’s wrong.
Those who knew Clayton and Colton said they would have been among the first to help classmates who sat on the bench.
“They would play with anyone. They loved to be outdoors,” said Principal Kate Jones. “They loved to play soccer, they loved to play football and, in general, recess was their favorite thing. I think what we wanted to do was incorporate something into our playground.”
"Mount Vernon High" Statue
"Mount Vernon High" is a statue created by Jim Hawtrey. It was commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Burgess in memory of their daughter, Jodi, who graduated from Mount Vernon High School. The statue is located at the front entrance to the middle school. Jodi Burgess, born May 10, 1954, grew up in Lisbon and Mount Vernon. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1972.
Donna Swenson Display Case
Donna Swenson will long be remembered for her hands-on-approach to teaching and her high quality art program. Her passion for art inspired her students in many aspects of life. Her vast knowledge of the visual and fine arts and her own never-ending quest for more knowledge and experience allowed her to learn and explore alongside her students.
Aside from a diverse list of classes that incorporated hands-on-work, Mrs. Swenson believed in understanding art and its effects on our culture.
Her wish was to show-and-tell about students who went on to art careers. Their stories can be seen in the "Donna Swenson Display Case" located in the high school. The Swenson case was built by former Industrial Arts Instructor, Scott White.
